The Borrowed Gift – Studio 55 Exhibition

I recently shifted my focus onto the sustainability of the work itself and began experimenting with natural materials -it became apparent that the use of these materials could be considered more sustainable if they were simply borrowed for the duration of the piece and then returned afterwards; this is where the idea of ‘The Borrowed Gift’ began. In asking the audience to take a gift – a parcel of earth and leaves – and to return it for themselves; I hoped to impart the joy of natural world. The work began with 20 parcels which were gradually all taken by members of the public, all of the natural materials were gathered from Mt.Edgcumbe and the other items from charity shops or were re-purposed materials. [Leaves, earth, rocks, pond water, grass, homemade paper from recycled books that couldn’t be sold, bed sheet from charity shop, re-purposed jars, log, pestle and mortar.]
